Iraq to award multi-billion-dollar contracts for Baghdad Metro Rail Project

Baghdad, Iraq (Metro Rail Today): In a significant move towards the revitalization of Iraq's infrastructure, a high-ranking Iraqi official has announced that on April 12, the country will award multi-billion-dollar contracts for the construction of the Baghdad Metro and the Najaf-Karbala rail line. Nassir Al-Asadi, a transport adviser to Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Sudani, revealed that numerous companies have submitted bids for these ambitious projects, marking a pivotal step in Iraq's post-war reconstruction efforts.

The Baghdad Metro project, Iraq's inaugural elevated metro initiative, envisions the construction of 64 train stations with a capacity to transport nearly 5 million passengers daily. Covering over 85% of the capital city, Baghdad, the metro will span at least 148 km, connecting residential areas and crucial facilities, including Baghdad International Airport. Distinguished by its automation, the metro's transport capacity is anticipated to rank among the highest globally relative to the population it serves.

With an estimated cost of around $2.5 billion in 2023, the project is expected to be executed by a collaboration between Alstom in France and Hyundai in South Korea. The technological prowess and expertise of these international partners will play a pivotal role in realizing Iraq's vision for a modern, efficient, and expansive metro system.

Simultaneously, the Najaf-Karbala rail line, covering an approximate distance of 80 km between the central Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala, adds another dimension to Iraq's ambitious infrastructure plans. The coordinated development of these projects aligns with the nation's broader goals of rebuilding and modernizing its essential transportation networks.

As the projects progress, the announcement on April 12 will unveil the company that will undertake the responsibility of executing these transformative endeavors. This strategic move is a testament to Iraq's commitment to fostering growth, connectivity, and economic development, setting the stage for a new era in the nation's transportation landscape.
