Bhopal, India (Metro Rail Today): Madhya Pradesh Government's ambitious metro expansion plans are facing significant challenges, particularly the highly anticipated Indore-Ujjain Metro Project, which is struggling to secure the required Rs 10,000 crore (₹100 billion) funding. Despite substantial progress on the Indore and Bhopal Metro systems, and the announcement of the Indore-Ujjain Metro, financial difficulties are threatening to delay its planned completion.
Initially conceived with the 2028 Kumbh Mela in Ujjain in mind, the Indore-Ujjain Metro was expected to provide a crucial transport link in time for the religious gathering. However, securing the massive funding needed for this project has proven difficult, making it increasingly unlikely that the metro will be ready before the event.
The project’s route alignment has been finalized, with a detailed project report (DPR) expected soon. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has completed the route survey, which includes 10 stations over a 47 km stretch connecting Lavkush Square in Indore to Mahakal Lok in Ujjain. The metro will feature a hybrid-mode system, offering an efficient and fast connection between the two cities. DMRC is set to submit the DPR to the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation in the near future.
While the metro project may miss the 2028 deadline, passengers can still rely on Vande Metro trains as an alternative for travel between Indore and Ujjain. The Ministry of Railways has already approved the operation of Vande Metro services on this route, ensuring commuters have a reliable transport option ahead of the Kumbh Mela.
Officials note that the Indore-Ujjain Metro, designed to be part of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), will operate at speeds of up to 135 km per hour, providing a fast and modern travel experience for passengers. However, with the significant funding gap, meeting the 2028 deadline for the metro’s completion remains uncertain.
As the state government continues to seek funding options, the future of the Indore-Ujjain Metro hangs in the balance, highlighting the financial complexities of large-scale infrastructure projects in India.
