Pune, India (Metro Rail Today): As Pune Metro continues to expand, authorities are prioritizing enhanced accessibility and long-term urban transportation planning. In a recent high-level meeting, Pune Metro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar and key officials discussed crucial proposals for metro expansion and traffic management. Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale has been tasked with preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed developments, signaling a major push toward a well-integrated transport network.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been directed to draft a DPR for extending the metro from Kharadi to Pune International Airport. This extension will be seamlessly integrated into the Khadakwasla–Swargate–Hadapsar–Kharadi metro corridor, creating a direct and efficient link between Khadakwasla and Pune Airport. The proposed route will significantly improve transit options for passengers and reduce road congestion.
Kharadi, a rapidly growing residential and commercial hub, has been identified as an ideal location for an Interchangeable and Multimodal Transport Hub. This development will facilitate seamless connectivity between various metro corridors and the airport, benefiting commuters from multiple routes, including Chandani Chowk to Wagholi, Nigdi to Swargate, the Shivajinagar-Kharadi-Airport Corridor, Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar, and Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar. By leveraging Kharadi’s strategic location, the new transport hub will transform Pune’s public transit landscape, making intercity travel more efficient and convenient.
Recognizing Pune’s increasing population and rising traffic congestion, authorities have proposed a new metro corridor from Katraj to Hinjawadi. This extension will not only accommodate the city’s rapid urban expansion but also improve public transport efficiency by creating a circular metro network linking Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The corridor is expected to be a game-changer in decongesting major roadways and offering an efficient alternative to road transport.
To address severe traffic congestion along the Vanaz to Chandani Chowk corridor, officials have proposed constructing a double-decker flyover. Inspired by the success of the Nal Stop flyover, this new infrastructure project aims to ease bottlenecks, ensuring smoother vehicular movement and better metro accessibility. The proposed flyover will be a crucial addition to Pune’s evolving transport network, reducing travel time for daily commuters.
These strategic metro expansions and infrastructure developments underscore Pune’s commitment to building a robust, future-ready public transport system. By integrating metro corridors, reducing congestion, and enhancing accessibility, Pune is set to emerge as a model city for seamless urban mobility. With a focus on sustainability and efficiency, these initiatives will redefine public transport in Pune, offering residents a world-class transit experience.
