RVNL floats ₹1,587 crore tender for Kolkata Metro’s long-pending Baranagar–Barrackpore Pink Line

Kolkata, India (Rail & Metro Today): The long-delayed Baranagar–Barrackpore Metro Corridor, popularly known as Kolkata Metro’s Pink Line, has received a major push with Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) inviting bids for the construction of 10 elevated metro stations and an elevated viaduct.

The estimated contract value of the package is ₹1,587.39 crore, marking a significant step forward for a project that has remained largely dormant for more than 16 years.

12.5-km Pink Line to Extend Metro Connectivity Towards Barrackpore

The proposed Baranagar–Barrackpore Metro Corridor is approximately 12.5 km long and is planned to extend Kolkata Metro services northwards from Baranagar towards Barrackpore.

The corridor is intended to connect densely populated northern suburbs with the wider Kolkata Metro network while improving access to major residential, commercial and employment centres along the Barrackpore Trunk Road (BT Road).

Under the newly floated tender, the selected contractor will undertake construction of the elevated viaduct and 10 elevated metro stations between Baranagar Metro Station and Mangal Pandey Metro Station.

The construction package covers approximately 12.3 km, from chainage 4.68 km to 16.98 km.

The tender represents an important development for the Pink Line, which has faced prolonged delays despite being sanctioned more than a decade ago.

Project Sanctioned in 2010

The Baranagar–Barrackpore corridor was originally approved in 2010, when Mamata Banerjee was the Railway Minister.

A Detailed Project Report (DPR) was subsequently prepared in 2011, but construction could not progress as planned.

One of the major obstacles involved the presence of critical underground water pipelines beneath BT Road. Concerns regarding the relocation and protection of these essential civic utilities created significant challenges for the proposed alignment and construction methodology.

As a result, the project remained stalled while other Kolkata Metro corridors moved ahead.

RVNL Tender Signals Fresh Momentum

The latest RVNL tender could now provide the project with the momentum required to move from prolonged planning to actual construction.

The package includes major civil engineering works comprising the elevated viaduct and 10 elevated stations, representing one of the most substantial construction packages for the corridor.

Once awarded, the contract will enable work to progress on a significant portion of the proposed Pink Line and could bring the long-awaited extension closer to implementation.

Boost for North Kolkata and Barrackpore Region

The Baranagar–Barrackpore corridor is expected to provide significant benefits to commuters travelling between North Kolkata, Baranagar and Barrackpore.

The region has experienced rapid population growth and increasing traffic congestion, particularly along BT Road. A dedicated metro connection could provide an alternative to road-based transportation, reduce travel times and improve access to employment and commercial centres in Kolkata.

The corridor will also strengthen integration with the existing Kolkata Metro network through its connection at Baranagar, providing passengers with improved access to other parts of the city.

A Long-Awaited Push for Kolkata Metro

The revival of the Pink Line comes as Kolkata continues to expand its metro network through multiple ongoing and planned corridors.

For the Baranagar–Barrackpore corridor, however, the latest tender is particularly significant because of the project's long history of delays.

With ₹1,587.39 crore worth of elevated civil works now put out to tender, the project has entered a more concrete implementation phase.

If the construction package progresses as planned, the Baranagar–Barrackpore Metro Corridor could finally move beyond years of uncertainty and deliver a much-awaited mass rapid transit connection to the northern suburbs of Kolkata.
