Sao Paulo, Brazil (Metro Rail Today): The bustling metropolis of São Paulo in Brazil is set to enhance its metro network as the state invites global train manufacturers to participate in an international tender. This strategic move aims to procure 44 state-of-the-art trains that will bolster the efficiency and capacity of the São Paulo Metro. The ambitious project, with a budget of €672 million, is financially backed by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES).
The state of São Paulo has identified the need for additional trains to meet the growing demand for metro services. The procurement of these six-car trains is a crucial step towards expanding the São Paulo Metro's Line 2/Green. This expansion is anticipated to not only alleviate overcrowding on existing lines, particularly Line 1/Blue and Line 3/Red but also enhance overall passenger experience and reduce journey times.
The contract, valued at Reais 3.6 billion (€672 million), is open for international bids until March 20. The selection process will prioritize competitive pricing, with the decision solely based on the submitted bids. Following the contract signing, the manufacturer must deliver the first train within 21 months, and the entire fleet of 44 trains is expected to be operational within five years. This timeline equates to a steady monthly delivery schedule, ensuring a timely and phased integration of the new trains into the existing metro network.
The São Paulo Metropolitan Transport Secretariat (STM) emphasizes that the new trains will not only enhance passenger capacity but also prioritize efficiency, safety, and comfort. With a design tailored to accommodate passengers with reduced mobility, the trains will feature modern amenities to meet the diverse needs of São Paulo's commuters.
Aligned with São Paulo's commitment to sustainability, the procurement and operation of these new trains will adhere to environmentally friendly practices. The construction and operation of the trains are planned with a minimal environmental impact, underscoring the city's dedication to creating a more sustainable and eco-conscious urban transport system.
As São Paulo ventures into this significant metro expansion initiative, the introduction of 44 new trains is poised to revolutionize the city's transportation landscape. With a focus on capacity augmentation, efficiency, and sustainability, São Paulo aims to set new standards in urban mobility. The international tender not only signifies progress for São Paulo but also offers a lucrative opportunity for global train manufacturers to contribute to the growth and development of one of Brazil's most dynamic and populous cities.
