New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant and strategic move, Ms. Seema Kumar, an esteemed officer of the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) from the 1986 batch, has assumed the position of Member (Operations & Business Development) in the Railway Board. With a distinguished career spanning over 35 years within the Indian Railways, Ms. Kumar's appointment underscores her expertise and leadership in the railway sector.
Ms. Seema Kumar, previously serving as Additional Member (Tourism & Catering) in the Railway Board, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to her new role. Her extensive responsibilities have included key positions such as Additional Member (Traffic) and Additional Member (Marketing & Business Development) in the Railway Board.
Adding to her responsibilities, Ms. Kumar has been entrusted with the additional charge of Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) since June 1, 2023. This dual role emphasizes the confidence in her ability to contribute significantly to the growth and development of crucial railway operations and business functions.
Ms. Kumar's academic achievements are noteworthy, being a Gold Medalist in M.Sc. (Physics) from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, and holding an M. Tech. from IIT/Delhi. Her commitment to excellence is further demonstrated through her participation in leadership programs from SDA Bocconi Institute/Milan, Italy, and the Indian Institute of Management/Bangalore.
Throughout her illustrious career, Ms. Seema Kumar has held key positions across Northern and West Central Railways. Notable roles include Principal Chief Safety Officer, Chief Commercial Manager/Passenger Services, Divisional Railway Manager, and General Manager/Passenger Reservation System.
An accomplished leader, Ms. Kumar played a crucial role in spearheading and completing various IT projects during her tenure as General Manager/Passenger Reservation System at the Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS). Her leadership contributed to the design and development of critical systems such as the Unreserved Ticketing System and the Next Generation e-ticketing System. Additionally, she played a pivotal role in integrating the National Train Enquiry System Application.
Under Ms. Kumar's guidance as Additional Member (Tourism & Catering), innovative schemes like Bharat Gaurav Trains (BGT) and One Station One Product (OSOP) were launched, accompanied by the issuance of policy guidelines. Her dedication to excellence has earned her prestigious awards, including the Platinum Award for Web-based Citizen Services in 2009, the Silver Award for e-Governance 2010-2011, and the National Tourism Award 2014-2015 for showcasing Cultural Heritage and Local Talent.
