Hyderabad, India (Metro Rail Today): The Telangana government is planning to allocate around 500 acres near Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamshabad, for the development of a major high-speed rail hub. The proposed hub is envisioned as a strategic national transport junction that will significantly enhance regional and inter-city connectivity while strengthening multimodal integration in South India.
Shamshabad has been identified as the preferred location due to its proximity to the international airport, enabling seamless integration between air and high-speed rail services. The plan positions the area as a tri-junction connecting Hyderabad with three major cities—Chennai, Bengaluru and Pune—through dedicated high-speed corridors.
The proposed Hyderabad–Chennai corridor is expected to span approximately 778 km, while the Hyderabad–Bengaluru route would cover around 586 km and the Hyderabad–Pune corridor about 556 km. These corridors aim to substantially reduce travel time, deepen economic linkages and strengthen regional mobility across key growth centres.
Beyond passenger connectivity, the Hyderabad–Chennai alignment is proposed to pass through Amaravati and link to Bandar Port, offering a significant logistics advantage. This connection is expected to enhance freight movement, improve port access and reinforce regional trade and supply chain infrastructure.
The Telangana government has urged the central government to expedite land acquisition and initiate construction at the earliest stage. The state has also expressed its willingness to bear land acquisition costs for associated rail infrastructure projects, reflecting strong institutional commitment toward fast-tracking the development.
Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said, “The proposal to establish a high-speed rail hub at Shamshabad marks a transformative step in India’s transport evolution. Integrating high-speed rail with an international airport creates a powerful multimodal ecosystem that can redefine regional connectivity, accelerate logistics efficiency, and unlock long-term economic value. If executed with strategic planning, this hub could emerge as a benchmark for future high-speed rail nodes across the country.”
If realised, the project has the potential to catalyse infrastructure growth, stimulate real estate development in South Hyderabad and position the Shamshabad airport region as a major mobility and logistics gateway for the Deccan corridor.
