Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a landmark moment for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), the first-ever metro line in Thane district officially entered its trial phase today. Metro Line-9 (Phase-1), which connects Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon, marks a transformative leap for the fast-growing Mira-Bhayandar region.
The trial run was flagged off in the presence of top Maharashtra leadership, including Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Shri Eknath Shinde and Shri Ajit Pawar, who also conducted a technical inspection of the newly built corridor.
Also in attendance were Shri Pratap Sarnaik, Minister of Transport, Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, along with legislators, civic officials, and senior representatives from MMRDA, MMMOCL, and the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation.
Metro Line-9 is part of India’s first-of-its-kind double-decker infrastructure, with a metro viaduct and vehicular flyover sharing a common structure. Phase-1 covers a 4.4 km stretch featuring four stations: Dahisar (East), Pandurangwadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon.
The corridor will deliver vital connectivity for Mira-Bhayandar residents to key transit hubs including:
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) via Lines 7 and 7A
Andheri (West) via Line 2B
Ghatkopar via Lines 7 and 1
Link Road through Line 2A
Thane via the upcoming Line-10
Vasai-Virar via the proposed Line-13
By improving integration across eastern, western, and northern suburbs, Metro Line-9 will drastically cut travel times, ease road congestion—especially around Dahisar Toll Naka—and promote green, sustainable commuting.
Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis remarked, "The Dahisar-Kashigaon stretch opens seamless connectivity along the Western Express Highway. It’s also the first time in MMR a double-decker structure has been implemented combining metro and vehicular traffic. Our commitment is clear—we aim to complete 50 km of metro this year, 62 km next year, and 60 km the year after. By 2027, Mumbai’s metro ecosystem will be truly world-class.”
“Line-9 will act as a regional connector across Thane, Palghar, and Raigad. We’re targeting a 337 km-long metro network, with 50–60 km commissioned each year. It’s not just about connectivity—it’s about drastically reducing vehicle usage, easing congestion, and cutting pollution across the region,” emphasized Chief Minister Shri Eknath Shinde.
Deputy Chief Minister Shri Ajit Pawar added, “Metro Line-9 exemplifies fast-tracked governance that benefits the common citizen. It will strengthen multimodal transit, support the regional economy, and create better quality of life for commuters,”
Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, explained the broader impact, "“Metro Line-9 is a strategic connector for Mira-Bhayandar. With seamless interchanges to Lines 1, 2A, 7, and the upcoming Lines 10 and 13, it creates an end-to-end journey experience. This project reflects our vision of ‘Mumbai in Minutes’—where mobility is efficient, inclusive, and unconstrained.”
Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, also shared her appreciation, “The launch of Metro Line-9 in Mira-Bhayandar is a defining moment in Thane’s urban journey. It reflects a bold shift toward integrated, high-capacity, and sustainable urban mobility. The double-decker concept is not only an engineering marvel but also a smart use of vertical infrastructure—ensuring faster delivery, cost efficiency, and minimum land disruption. Congratulations to MMRDA and the leadership team for making this vision a reality.”
With energy-efficient features such as regenerative braking, green construction practices, and a focus on last-mile connectivity, Metro Line-9 is designed to serve as a model for smart urban transit solutions in India.
This trial run paves the way for full commercial operations soon, opening a new era of high-speed, eco-friendly public transport for the growing population of Mira-Bhayandar and beyond.
