Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (Metro Rail Today): The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has awarded a major contract valued at approximately US $2.8 billion for the extension of the Riyadh Metro Red Line to an international consortium led by Webuild, in partnership with Larsen & Toubro (L&T), NESMA, and ALSTOM.
The project marks a significant expansion of Riyadh’s world-class metro network and reinforces Saudi Arabia’s commitment to advanced, sustainable urban mobility under Vision 2030.
The contract covers the design and construction of an 8.4 km fully automated, driverless metro extension, comprising:
1.3 km of elevated viaduct sections
7.1 km of underground tunnels, to be excavated using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs)
Five modern metro stations, including three underground stations
Advanced signaling, control, and system integration works
Once completed, the extension will be seamlessly integrated into Riyadh’s Guinness World Records–recognised driverless metro network, part of the city’s expansive 176 km, six-line metro system, among the most ambitious urban transit projects globally.
A key highlight of the project is the introduction of two new stations serving King Saud University, significantly improving accessibility for students and faculty. The extension will also strengthen connectivity to major urban developments and establish a crucial link to Diriyah, the first capital of Saudi Arabia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This enhanced rail access is expected to support Diriyah’s transformation into a global cultural and tourism hub, while easing road congestion and promoting public transport adoption.
Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, Managing Director & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said: “The Riyadh Metro Red Line extension is a landmark project that showcases how large-scale, fully automated metro systems are reshaping urban mobility in the Middle East. The integration of underground, elevated, and advanced system technologies reflects global best practices and sets a strong benchmark for future metro expansions worldwide.”
The project underscores Saudi Arabia’s focus on smart, high-capacity public transport solutions to support rapid urban growth, reduce carbon emissions, and improve quality of life. With global players collaborating on its execution, the Riyadh Metro extension further positions the Kingdom as a leader in next-generation urban infrastructure.
