Metro Rail Transit Line (MRT-7): A New Way Forward for the North
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (Metro Rail Today): In a monumental step towards enhancing urban mobility, Abu Dhabi has commenced construction on the long-anticipated Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. This transformative project, in the planning stages for over a decade, is now underway with the National Infrastructure Construction Company (NICC) and National Projects & Construction (NPC) taking charge of the construction.
The initial phase of the project is set to redefine transportation across the UAE capital. NICC and NPC are diligently working on constructing an 8.4 km tram link spanning through Electra Street, Al-Maryah Island, and Al-Reem Island. This segment will consist of 15 strategically located stations and a depot crucial for seamless operations.
The Abu Dhabi Transport Company (ADTC), established in March last year, is spearheading the implementation of this visionary project. Tasked with developing, operating, and enhancing transport systems in rural and urban areas across the emirate, ADTC aims to provide integrated transport services, including vehicle and bus rentals.
As part of the meticulous planning, Abu Dhabi invited expressions of interest last year for consultancy work related to the LRT system's first phase. The contract includes a comprehensive design review, paving the way for potential supervisory roles in subsequent phases. This emphasis on consulting ensures that the project adheres to the highest standards of design and functionality.
As the Middle East and Africa prioritize the development of world-class infrastructure, a new platform has emerged to foster collaboration and discussion. Professionals from around the globe involved in Rail, Metro, Tram, and LRT now have a dedicated group to exchange ideas and insights on the challenges and opportunities present in the MEA region.
Abu Dhabi's Light Rail Project signifies not only a leap forward in urban transportation but also a testament to the region's commitment to cutting-edge infrastructure. With construction now in full swing, the emirate is on track to realize its vision of a modern, efficient, and interconnected public transportation system.
