Alstom delivers first trainset to Agra Metro Rail Project

Agra, India (Metro Rail Today): The french mulinational Rolling Stock & systems leader Alstom has delivered its first train set to Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) for Agra Metro Rail Project on 6th March 2023. The train set reached in Agra today and successfully unloaded at Agra Metro's PAC Depot. The unloading ceremony was held in presence of UPMRC Managing Director Sushil Kumar in the depot.

"The first metro train was unloaded at Agra Metro Rail Depot in presence of MD UPMRC Shri Sushil Kumar, marking a very important achievement for the team of UPMRC, Agra Metro Project. The trains for Agra Metro are built in Savli, in Gujarat under government’s Make in India initiative and the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ mission," said the statement issued by UPMRC.

“There will be a total of 28 trains for Agra Metro and 6 trains for the priority corridor, initially. The metro trains for Agra Metro Project carry a distinct yellow colour and they are equipped with ultra modern technology and seamless design,” said Sushil Kumar, MD, UPMRC.

In August 2022, the first look of metro trains for Agra Metro Rail Project was unveiled by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Here are some salient features of Agra Metro Train:-

  • These trains will have the feature of 'regenerative braking', with the help of which up to 35% of the energy generated through the brakes applied in the trains will be regenerated and used again in the system. State-of-the-art 'propulsion system' will also be present in these trains to reduce air pollution.
  • These trains will have carbon-dioxide sensor based air-conditioning system, which will run according to the number of passengers present in the train and save energy.
  • These trains will run with communication based train control system keeping in view the automatic train operation.
  • The passenger capacity of Agra Metro trains will be 974 passengers.
  • The design speed of these trains will be 90 km/h and the operation speed will be up to 80 km/h.
  • In the first and last coach of the train, there will be a separate place for the wheelchair for the disabled. There will be a 'Long Stop Request Button' near the wheelchair location, by pressing which PwD can inform the train operator to keep the door open for longer time so that they can get down from the train comfortably.
  • Fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and CCTV cameras etc. will also be installed in the trains.
  • Agra Metro trains will get power from third rail i.e. third rail running parallel to the tracks, so it will not require setup of poles and wires and infrastructure will look better and beautiful.
  • These trains are designed on the basis of state-of-the-art fire and crash safety standards.
  • Each train will have 24 CCTV cameras, whose video feed will directly reach the train operator and the central security room in the depot.
  • Each train will also have 56 USB charging points.
  • Each train will also have 36 LCD panels for infotainment.
  • Talk back button: Passengers can talk to the train operator in case of emergency by pressing this button. The location of the passenger and the CCTV footage will be displayed directly on the monitor near the train operator.

Initially, upon their arrival the trains will be tested on the 1 km long test track built inside the depot for all equipments and safety features.

In July 2020, UPMRC had awarded a combined contract worth Rs 2,051 crore to Bombardier Transportation (later the entity was acquired by Alstom) to design, manufacture, supply, testing, commissioning and training of 201 nos. standard gauge cars, including Train Control & Signalling System for Agra & Kanpur Metro Project with an option to supply additional 51 coaches.

Two metro corridors of 29.4 km length are proposed to be constructed in Taj Nagari Agra at a cost of 8379.62 crores. The first corridor being constructed between Taj East Gate to Sikandra has a total of 13 stations, including 6 elevated and 7 underground stations. On the other hand, the second corridor to be built between Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar will have 14 elevated stations.

Presently, the construction work of Priority Corridor between Taj East Gate to Jama Masjid is going on at a fast pace. There are 3 elevated and 3 underground stations in the priority corridor.

In December 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of Agra Metro Rail Project.
