Bengaluru, India (Metro Rail Today): In a major boost to India’s rolling stock modernisation drive, BEML Limited has bagged a prestigious ₹1,888 crore order from Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, for the design, manufacture, and supply of state-of-the-art Linke-Hofmann-Busch (LHB) passenger coaches.
The contract covers both day and sleeper variants and is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing programme to replace outdated loco-hauled coaches with modern, safer, and more efficient LHB coaches. The ambitious project will be executed within a tight 15-month delivery timeline, underlining BEML’s ability to manage high-volume, time-sensitive manufacturing at scale.
Safety & Design: Lightweight stainless-steel body, anti-telescopic construction, and advanced suspension for stability.
Efficiency: Fully compatible with End-On Generation (EOG) technology, reducing operational costs.
Durability: Lower maintenance requirements and longer service life.
Passenger Comfort: Modular interiors, bio-toilets with pressurised flushing, enhanced noise and vibration insulation.
Safety Systems: CCTV surveillance, emergency alarm systems, backup lighting, and robust crashworthiness standards.
Convenience: Mobile charging points at each berth/seat and ergonomic seating arrangements.
The order aligns with Indian Railways’ larger vision to standardise LHB coaches across its passenger fleet for improved safety, speed, and passenger experience. LHB coaches have already proven their resilience in minimising casualties during derailments, making them a core component of railway safety upgrades.
This latest win also reinforces BEML’s role as a key contributor to ‘Make in India – Make for the World’, with in-house design and manufacturing capabilities that rival global rail giants.
“This ₹1,888 crore order not only reflects the trust Indian Railways places in BEML but also marks a step forward in India’s journey towards a fully modernised passenger fleet. LHB technology is the gold standard for safety and comfort, and its accelerated adoption will enhance travel experience nationwide,” said Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group. “It also sends a strong signal about India’s self-reliance in high-quality rolling stock manufacturing.”
With this contract, BEML adds another milestone to its growing portfolio, which already includes Vande Bharat trainsets, metro and rapid rail coaches, and upcoming high-speed rail rolling stock.
