Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (Metro Rail Today): The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has extended the deadline for submitting bids for the highly anticipated Riyadh Metro Line 7 Design & Build contract. Bidding consortia now have until June 15, 2025, to submit their offers, giving companies additional time to prepare their proposals for this landmark urban mobility project.
The competition for the contract has intensified in recent weeks, with several new players entering the race and others withdrawing. In December 2024, the Chinese Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Chang Hua, revealed that Chinese railway companies, including the prominent China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC), were planning to bid for the contract. This development has attracted international attention, particularly from major global firms.
Among the consortia bidding for the project are industry giants like Alstom, Hitachi Rail, Siemens, Samsung C&T, and Chinese firms such as CRRC. Other major players include Alayuni, Albawani, Almabani, FCC, Freysinnet Contracting, Limak, Mapa, Nesma, OHLA, and WeBuild. Leading design consultants for the project include Aecom, Ayesa, Dowha, Idom, Pini, Sener, and Typsa.
Riyadh Metro Line 7 will be developed in two phases. Phase 1 will cover a 65-kilometer alignment linking key areas such as Qiddiya Entertainment City, King Abdullah International Gardens, King Salman Park, Misk City, and Diriyah Gate. This phase will consist of 47 kilometers of underground tracks and 19 kilometers of elevated tracks, serving 19 stations. Phase 2, which is still in the design stage, will extend northeast to connect Diriyah Gate with New Murabba and King Khaled International Airport (KKIA).
Once completed, Line 7 will not only revolutionize urban mobility in Riyadh but also support the city’s environmental goals. The new metro line will reduce reliance on private vehicles, easing road congestion, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable urban environment. The project aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to develop eco-friendly infrastructure across the capital.
The Riyadh Metro’s first six lines are already operational, with an impressive 18 million passengers using the network in just the first eleven weeks since its public launch. As Line 7 moves closer to reality, it will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Riyadh’s transportation landscape.
