Chennai, India (Metro Rail Today): Chennai Metro Rail Corporation (CMRL) has awarded Fujitec India two significant contracts for the supply and installation of heavy-duty escalators and travelators as part of the 118.9 km Chennai Metro Phase 2 expansion. The combined value of the two Letters of Acceptance (LoAs), issued after extensive technical and financial evaluation, stands at ₹600.9 crore, making Fujitec India one of the key vertical mobility partners for the project.
The first and larger of the two contracts, valued at ₹453.6 crore, covers the design, manufacturing, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of heavy-duty escalators and travelators for Phase 2’s Corridor 3, which stretches from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Sholinganallur. CMRL had invited bids with a completion requirement of 2,070 days, and Fujitec India emerged as the lowest and only qualified bidder after the technical bids opened in November 2024. The financial evaluation, completed on 27 November 2025, paved the way for the formal award of the contract.
The second contract, valued at ₹147.3 crore, was awarded to Fujitec India for supplying and installing escalators along Corridor 5 between Madhavaram Depot and Koyambedu. This tender carried a 1,940-day delivery requirement and similarly saw only one submission when bids were opened. Fujitec India again qualified technically and financially, securing the LoA after the latest round of evaluations.
Chennai Metro Phase 2 is one of India’s most ambitious urban transit expansions, consisting of three major corridors spanning close to 119 km, integrating elevated and underground stretches across the fast-growing city. With Corridor 3, Corridor 4 and Corridor 5 under active development, the project is expected to significantly enhance passenger capacity, network connectivity and last-mile integration once completed. The installation of next-generation escalators and travelators is considered critical for ensuring smooth passenger flow, particularly at interchange hubs and high-footfall stations.
Industry experts describe these contract awards as a major milestone in Chennai Metro’s efforts to modernise station infrastructure. Offering her perspective, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, said, “Chennai Metro Phase 2 continues to set new benchmarks for scale, technology and execution. The award of escalator packages to Fujitec India underscores the project’s commitment to world-class passenger experience and operational reliability. As Chennai prepares for one of the largest metro expansions in the country, the emphasis on high-quality vertical mobility solutions will play a crucial role in shaping commuter comfort and accessibility.”
The Phase 2 network is expected to transform public transportation in the region, connecting residential, industrial, IT and commercial zones through seamless metro travel. With the latest contract awards, station construction and systems integration are set to move forward at a faster pace, reinforcing Chennai Metro’s position as one of India’s most advanced and rapidly expanding urban rail systems.
