Bengaluru, India (Metro Rail Today): The Karnataka government has allocated ₹600 crore for the Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project (BSRP) in the 2026–27 state budget, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening regional rail connectivity and easing congestion in the rapidly growing Bengaluru metropolitan region.
Presenting the state budget on Friday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that significant progress has been made in land acquisition and construction activities for key suburban rail corridors under the project.
According to the Chief Minister, land acquisition for Corridor-2, which runs from Benniganahalli to Chikkabanavara, has been completed and construction works are currently underway.
Meanwhile, land acquisition for Corridor-4, connecting Heelalige to Rajanukunte, is still in progress.
The state government has set an ambitious target to complete both corridors by December 2030, which will significantly enhance suburban rail connectivity across the Bengaluru region.
Out of the total allocation, ₹500 crore has been earmarked for ongoing works related to these corridors during the current fiscal year.
In addition to the suburban railway initiative, the government highlighted progress on the Baiyappanahalli–Hosur and Yeshwanthpur–Channasandra railway doubling project.
The project is being implemented at a total cost of ₹812 crore, with the Karnataka government contributing ₹406 crore as its share.
According to the Chief Minister, doubling works covering approximately 14 kilometres have already been completed and opened for public service.
For the current fiscal year, the government has allocated ₹100 crore to support the continuation of the project, which is expected to improve train capacity and operational efficiency on these important regional rail corridors.
Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said that suburban rail systems are essential for improving mobility in large metropolitan regions.
“Bengaluru’s suburban railway network will play a crucial role in complementing the metro system and addressing long-distance commuter demand. Investments in suburban rail infrastructure can significantly reduce road congestion while improving connectivity between the city centre and rapidly growing suburban areas,” she said.
She added that integrating metro, suburban rail, and bus systems is key to creating a sustainable and efficient multimodal transport ecosystem for megacities like Bengaluru.
The Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project is considered a critical component of the city’s long-term urban mobility strategy, aimed at integrating suburban rail services with metro, bus, and road networks.
Once completed, the project is expected to reduce traffic congestion, shorten commuting times for suburban travellers, and support the city’s expanding economic zones.
