Singapore (Metro Rail Today): The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has officially announced that the Singapore Rail Test Centre (SRTC), a cutting-edge 50-hectare train testing facility near Tuas Link station, is now fully operational. The newly completed centre will play a pivotal role in advancing Singapore’s railway infrastructure by enabling rigorous testing of trains and core rail systems locally, eliminating the need for overseas facilities.
With the completion of the SRTC, train testing will no longer be constrained by limited engineering hours on operational rail lines or disruptions to passenger services. The facility offers a controlled environment for round-the-clock testing, supporting both new and existing rail lines.
“The SRTC will play a key role in ongoing efforts to enhance rail reliability as we continue to expand and renew our rail network,” LTA stated.
Equipped with state-of-the-art railway testing technologies, the centre will allow for comprehensive evaluation of train performance, signalling systems, power supply, and communication networks before their integration into the main MRT network.
The SRTC features three dedicated test tracks to facilitate various aspects of train testing:
2.8 km High-Speed Test Track – Designed for trains to reach speeds of up to 100km/h, enabling traction and brake testing. This track supports both third-rail and overhead conductor rail power systems, making it compatible with trains from different MRT lines.
2.8 km Looped Performance & Integration Test Track – A specialized S-track layout to conduct integrated testing of railway systems.
3 km Looped Endurance Test Track – Features an uphill gradient section, allowing for mileage accumulation tests to assess train reliability over extended operations.
Additionally, the three-story operations complex within the SRTC includes an Operations Control Centre (OCC), maintenance workshops, and administration offices, further supporting mid-life train upgrades and rail workforce training.
Currently, trains are transported into the SRTC by road using trailers. However, LTA has awarded a S$56 million contract to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (Singapore Branch) to construct a rail viaduct linking Tuas Link station to the SRTC. Expected to be completed in 2029, this connection will streamline train transfers into the test facility.
Since November 2023, the SRTC has already played a vital role in testing the new 3rd-generation Circle Line (CCL) trains (C851E). To date, nearly half of the 23 new C851E trains have arrived in Singapore for testing at the facility.
Beyond testing, the SRTC will also serve as an innovation hub for rail technology development, fostering collaboration between LTA, rail operators, and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). This initiative aims to enhance Singapore’s expertise in railway operations and maintenance, contributing to long-term rail sustainability and efficiency.
As Singapore continues to expand and modernize its rail network, the SRTC stands as a milestone in rail engineering—ensuring higher reliability, safety, and efficiency for commuters.
