Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): The Commission of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) has started safety inspection of remaining sections of Mumbai Metro Line 2A (Dahisar - DN Nagar, Andheri West) and Line 7 (Dahisar East - Andheri East).
“A team from CMRS is carrying out the supervision. Once the safety clearance certificate is in place the commercial operations can begin,” informed S V R Srinivas, Metropolitan Commissioner, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
He said that the CMRS inspection would be competed by the end of December 2022 and the entire Metro Line 2A & 7 will be opened to the public in January 2023 as new year gift.
The CMRS team will carry safety inspection of tracks, signalling, electrical systems, and civil works before provding their clearance for the opening of the corridor for commercial operations. MMRDA had already obtained a provisional clearance from Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) for conducting a trial test run of the train on these sections.
In the first phase, MMRDA had launched a 20-km stretch between Aarey and Dhanukarwadi to the public on 2nd April this year. The 20-km stretch is drawing a good average daily ridership of 27,000, whereas the monthly average ridership is 8 lakh, as per the MMRDA data. After opening of the remaining stretches the total operational length will be extended to 35 km.
"Once both lines (comprising 30 stations) become operational, it will together see a daily ridership of 12.77 lakh by 2031," said MMRDA officials.
Line 2A has 17 stations at Andheri (West), Lower Oshiwara, Oshiwara, Goregaon (West), Pahadi Goregaon, Lower Malad, Malad (West), Valnai, Dahanukarwadi, Kandivali (West), Pahadi Eksar, Borivali (West), Eksar, Mandapeshwar, Kandarpada, Upper Dahisar and Dahisar (East) while Line 7 has 13 stations at Gundavali, Mogra, Jogeshwari (East), Goregaon (East), Aarey, Dindoshi, Kurar, Akurli, Poisar, Magathane, Devipada, RashtriyaUdyan and Ovaripada. The both elevated corridors are passing from Link Road and Western Express Highway (WEH). The Charkop Metro depot is feeding trains for the both corridors (line 2A & 7).
The estimated cost of Metro Line 2A is Rs 6,410 crore while the Line 7 is Rs 6,208 crore. The both lines are being funded by Asian Development Bank (ADB) and National Development Bank (NDB). State-run BEML Ltd is supplying metro trainsets (Rolling Stock) for these corridors.
