Moscow, Russia (Metro Rail Today): Moscow has taken a significant step forward in improving its public transportation system with the recent opening of a new tram line along Sergey Radonezhsky Street. Officially inaugurated yesterday, the new Tram No. 2 route connects six key districts, providing residents with an efficient and convenient alternative for navigating the bustling capital.
The newly established Tram No. 2 route spans from 3rd Vladimirskaya Street to the bustling Kursky Train Station, enabling passengers to complete the journey in a mere 30 minutes. Previously, this trip required about 40 minutes and involved two transfers. The introduction of this tram line is expected to directly benefit approximately 700,000 residents in the southeastern, eastern, and central districts of Moscow. With direct access to major transportation hubs and essential services, the tram line promises to enhance daily commuting experiences significantly.
One of the standout features of the new tram line is its seamless integration with Moscow’s extensive transportation network. Riders can transfer conveniently at 15 different stations, including major nodes like Kursky Train Station and metro stops such as Ploshchad Iliicha and Rimskaya. Future developments aim to connect the line with the Serp i Molot Moscow City Railway Station, further enhancing connectivity for passengers.
The new line is serviced by seven cutting-edge Vityaz-Moskva trams, designed with modern amenities to ensure a comfortable journey. These trams feature low floors for easy accessibility, climate control, and charging stations for electronic devices. Operating at 10-minute intervals, they guarantee frequent and reliable service, making daily travel smoother for all.
The introduction of Tram No. 2 has also led to the revitalization of Sergey Radonezhsky Street. The even-numbered side now boasts a dedicated pedestrian walkway, improving accessibility for residents heading to metro stations and public transport stops. Upgraded roadways, new lighting, navigation signs, and elevated tram stops have transformed the area into a more inviting space for both pedestrians and tram passengers.
Incorporating innovative construction techniques, the new tram line features seamless track laying, rubber seals, and specialized vibration-damping mats. These enhancements ensure a quieter and smoother ride, significantly elevating the passenger experience. The 3.9-kilometer track is strategically separated from vehicular traffic, promoting safety and operational efficiency.
The launch of Tram No. 2 represents a major investment in Moscow’s public transport infrastructure, showcasing the city’s dedication to providing efficient, accessible options for its residents. As the city commemorates the 125th anniversary of the Moscow tram, this new line solidifies the tram’s integral role in the city’s transport system.
According to Maksim Liksutov, Moscow's Deputy Mayor for Transport and Industry, "The opening of the new tram line and the launch of Tram No. 2 provide residents with new, convenient routes for their daily commutes. The new line connects nine different railway lines, including metro, MCD, and MCC, and integrates over 200 social amenities, including schools, hospitals, and shopping centers, further enhancing accessibility for residents."
With the opening of this tram line, Moscow continues to enhance its public transport offerings, ensuring that residents can enjoy efficient, safe, and modern travel options throughout the city.
