New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): In a historic accomplishment, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has etched its name in the annals of transportation history by recording an extraordinary 68.16 lakh passenger journeys on Monday (August 28, 2023). This achievement stands as the pinnacle of daily passenger journeys, both before and after the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic.
For context, the previous record for the highest daily passenger journeys was 66,18,717, achieved on February 10, 2020, just before the pandemic-induced disruptions reshaped travel dynamics.
This momentous feat, realized just recently, arrives after a phase marked by trials and tribulations, serving as a reflection of the steadfastness and confidence the citizens of Delhi NCR have in the exceptional transport network curated by DMRC.
The accomplishment stands as a testament to the relentless dedication of DMRC's staff, the unwavering support of the Delhi-NCR populace, and the resolute commitment to delivering transportation services that are secure, efficient, and environmentally friendly. The Delhi Metro's ridership has shown a consistent increase since its inception until FY 2016–17. The daily passenger count began at 80,000 in 2002 and surged to 2.8 million in FY 2016–17. However, there was a decline in ridership during 2017-18, followed by a slight rise in 2018-19 due to fare hikes. A peak of 5.16 million passengers was reached on a single day in July 2019. In FY 2019–20, the average daily ridership was 2.78 million.
The COVID-19 pandemic led to the suspension of Delhi Metro on March 25, 2020, and when operations resumed on September 12, 2020, the average daily ridership dropped to 0.88 million in FY 2020–21. The figures illustrate the dynamic ridership trend of Delhi Metro over the years, with fluctuations influenced by various factors including fare changes and the pandemic.
Presently, the Delhi Metro Rail network consists of about 390.14 km with 286 stations. The network has now crossed the boundaries of Delhi to reach NOIDA and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Bahadurgarh and Ballabhgarh in Haryana.
