Dhaka Metro Line 6 set to extend from Uttara to Tongi

Dhaka, Bangladesh (Metro Rail Today):  Road Transport and Bridges Minister, Obaidul Quader, revealed that a survey is currently underway for extending the Dhaka Metro Rail from Uttara to Tongi. The minister disclosed this information during the inauguration of the Bangabandhu Corner at the DMTCL Building in Uttara’s Diabari on Saturday.

Quader informed the public that the construction work on the Motijheel to Kamalapur section of the metro rail is expected to conclude by June next year. He also mentioned that discussions on extending the service hours of the metro rail, including during events like Ijtema and Boi Mela, will influence the decision.

As of the announcement, the metro rail operations from Uttara North to Motijheel commenced daily, excluding Fridays, starting from 7:10 am, with the last train departing from Motijheel to Uttara North at 8:40 pm. The headway is set at 10 minutes during peak hours and 12 minutes during off-peak hours.

Quader underscored the government's dedication to providing maximum facilities for metro rail passengers. He shared an ambitious plan for all six lines of the metro rail to be operational by 2030. Quader concluded by emphasizing the continuous efforts of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government to realize the dream of a Sonar Bangla, envisioned by the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The Dhaka Metro Rail, a mass rapid transit system serving Bangladesh's capital city, Dhaka, is poised to transform urban mobility in the region. Owned and operated by the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), the metro system aims to alleviate traffic congestion in the city, in conjunction with the Dhaka BRT, proposed Dhaka Subway, and Dhaka suburban circular rail.

With five planned lines, including the operational MRT Line 6 and the under-construction MRT Line 1 and 5, the metro network plays a crucial role in the Strategic Transport Plan outlined by the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA).

The recent commencement of commercial operations on the first section of MRT Line 6 in December 2022 marks a significant milestone. The ongoing construction of other lines, such as the third phase set to be completed by 2026, signifies the city's commitment to sustainable urban transport.

The planned expansion of MRT Line 6 towards Savar Upazila and Tongi further strengthens the metro's potential to connect key areas and enhance accessibility for commuters. As Dhaka envisions a future with an integrated and efficient metro network, the strides made in metro rail development align with the city's growth and modernization.

The efforts invested in expanding the Dhaka Metro Rail, coupled with strategic planning and operational advancements, position it as a catalyst for positive urban transformation. The commitment to completing ongoing projects and the ambitious goal of having all six lines operational by 2030 underscore Dhaka's determination to create a more sustainable and connected future.
