Egis appointed Construction Supervision Consultant for Abou Qir Metro in Alexandria, Egypt

Alexandria, Egypt (Metro Rail Today): Egis, a global leader in construction and engineering consultancy, has been awarded a prestigious contract to oversee Project Implementation Unit (PIU) Support, Contract Management, and Construction Supervision Consulting services for the upcoming metro line extending from Abo Qir to Misr Station in Alexandria, Egypt. This transformative project, named the Abou Qir Metro, is set to revolutionize Alexandria’s public transport system by converting the existing diesel train service into a modern, energy-efficient electric metro system.

The new Abou Qir Metro line will stretch approximately 22 kilometers, running from Abo Qir to Misr Station. This ambitious project is a collaborative effort involving the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) and the Engineering Consultants Group S.A. (ECG). The initiative aims to significantly enhance energy efficiency and provide a sustainable, reliable, and efficient transportation solution for the residents of Alexandria. By replacing the outdated diesel service with a modern electric metro, the project promises to reduce emissions, improve travel times, and offer a higher quality of service to passengers.

Egis’ Role in the Project

Egis will serve as the lead consultant, playing a critical role in several key areas:

  1. PIU Support: Egis will assist NAT in managing the project effectively, ensuring that all phases are executed according to plan. This includes coordinating between different stakeholders, monitoring progress, and addressing any issues that arise to keep the project on track.

  2. Contract Management: Egis will oversee the contractual aspects of the project, ensuring smooth collaboration between all parties involved and adherence to contractual obligations. This includes managing contracts, negotiating terms, and resolving disputes to ensure a seamless execution of the project.

  3. Construction Supervision: Egis will provide on-site supervision of construction activities, ensuring that the project meets the highest quality standards and is delivered on schedule. This involves regular inspections, quality control, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

Omar Benzaria, Regional Transportation Director at Egis, highlighted the significance of this project: “As we look to the future of urban mobility, the shift towards integrated, sustainable transit solutions becomes increasingly imperative. This new metro line project represents a significant part of this trend, showcasing how innovative engineering and strategic planning can redefine and future-proof urban landscapes. For Egis, this project allows us to ensure that new benchmarks are set for operational efficiency in public transportation, pioneering new strategies that cities around the world will replicate in the coming years.”

Abou Qir Metro Line

The Abou Qir Metro line is designed to follow the existing railway line and will be divided into two main sections:

Elevated Section: Spanning 15.5 kilometers, this section will include fourteen new, modern metro stations. The stations include:

  • Abu Qir: The terminal station for the line.
  • El Maamoura: Offering connections to another railway line.
  • Montazah: Serving as an intermediate terminal.
  • Victoria: Connecting to the Raml Tram.

Ground-Level Section: Covering 6 kilometers, this section will feature six stations strategically placed to enhance connectivity and accessibility. Key stations include:

  • Kafer Abdou: Linking to the depot.
  • Sidi Gaber: Providing a connection to the Raml Tram.
  • Misr: Integrating with the existing railway network.

One of the primary goals of the Abou Qir Metro project is to prioritize sustainability and minimize disruption for passengers. By reusing the right-of-way of the existing Misr Station – Abu Qir railway line, the project aims to reduce environmental impact and ensure a smooth transition for current users of the service. The new electric metro system will offer a quieter, cleaner, and more efficient mode of transport, benefiting both the environment and the community.

The Abou Qir Metro line is expected to play a crucial role in Alexandria’s urban development. By providing a reliable and efficient transportation option, the metro will support economic growth, improve accessibility, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents. The project aligns with broader efforts to modernize Egypt’s infrastructure and promote sustainable urban development.

While the project presents numerous opportunities, it also comes with challenges. Managing the transition from a diesel train service to an electric metro system requires careful planning and coordination. Egis’ expertise in construction supervision and contract management will be vital in addressing these challenges and ensuring the successful delivery of the project.

The metro line will need to navigate densely populated urban areas, requiring meticulous planning to avoid disruption and ensure safety. Additionally, the integration of new technologies and systems will demand robust training and capacity-building initiatives for local personnel.

The appointment of Egis as the Construction Supervision Consultant for the Abou Qir Metro project marks a significant milestone in Alexandria’s journey towards a more sustainable and efficient transportation system. With a focus on innovation, sustainability, and operational excellence, this project is set to transform urban mobility in Alexandria and serve as a model for other cities worldwide. As the project progresses, the collaboration between Egis, NAT, and ECG will be instrumental in delivering a metro system that meets the highest standards of quality and performance.
