Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): Mumbai’s monorail system has moved a step closer to a major operational overhaul, with the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) confirming that four firms have submitted bids for the ₹297 crore contract to operate and maintain the Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk–Chembur corridor. The five-year contract marks an important attempt to reset and stabilise India’s only monorail system, which has endured years of operational challenges.
According to MMMOCL, the bidders whose proposals have been accepted at the technical stage include Adani Infrastructure Management Services Limited, Indwell Constructions Private Limited, Konkan Railway Corporation Limited and Power Mech Projects Ltd. Their submissions have now been forwarded for detailed technical evaluation, following which the financial bids of the qualified firms will be opened to identify the lowest bidder.
The tender, issued under ID 2025_MMRDA_1204955_1, was floated specifically for the operation and maintenance of the monorail section that links Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk and Chembur. The scope of the contract involves comprehensive responsibilities such as train operations, maintenance of rolling stock, station management, depot operations, traction and power systems, signalling and telecom upkeep, and full-spectrum safety and emergency response management. MMMOCL aims to bring in a professional and experienced O&M partner capable of delivering consistent, reliable and commuter-centric services.
The move comes at a crucial time for the monorail, which has weathered multiple breakdowns, equipment shortages and recurring technical faults since its first section opened in 2014. Inconsistency in rolling stock availability, ageing components and challenges in system upgrades have weakened public confidence. Outsourcing O&M to a specialised operator is therefore being viewed as an important step toward long-term course correction.
Once the technical evaluation is completed, MMMOCL will open the financial proposals and finalise the winning bidder. The chosen operator is expected to take charge soon after the contract award, setting the stage for a new chapter in Mumbai’s monorail operations.
