New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant boost to India's high-speed rail ambitions, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a ₹4,467 crore contract for track construction on a key section of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR). The contract covers the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Zaroli stretch and includes the installation of ballastless slab track system, a core component of the bullet train’s high-speed infrastructure.
Awarded by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL), the contract (Package T3) includes track works for a 135.45 km stretch, covering both Mumbai and Thane districts in Maharashtra and part of Valsad district in Gujarat. The section also includes India’s first underground bullet train terminus at BKC, which is a flagship component of the broader 508-km corridor linking Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
The scope of work involves the supply and installation of the Japanese Shinkansen-based Slab Track System (J Slab), critical for enabling operational speeds of 320 km/h, ensuring ride stability, and reducing maintenance over time. The J Slab system has already been adopted for the C4 and C5 packages in Gujarat and is now being extended into Maharashtra with this contract.
This is the third major track-related package awarded to L&T under the MAHSR project, underscoring the company’s strategic role in executing India’s first bullet train corridor. NHSRCL stated that the work will include track slabs for viaducts, bridges, tunnels, and maintenance depots, along with safety and design compliance based on Japanese high-speed rail standards.
Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, commented on the development, “This contract marks a critical milestone in bringing high-speed rail to India’s western economic corridor. The BKC–Zaroli section is pivotal not just because of its engineering complexity, but also because it connects urban cores, high-density zones, and future economic hubs. L&T’s involvement ensures technical reliability and project momentum.”
The Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train project is being executed with technical and financial assistance from Japan and is expected to be operational in phases beginning 2028. Once complete, it will reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to under 2 hours, compared to the current 6–7 hours by conventional trains.
The BKC–Zaroli track package will be integrated with other civil and systems packages already underway, including station construction, viaducts, power supply, signalling, and rolling stock procurement.
With this contract, NHSRCL continues to move steadily toward building a world-class, high-speed rail ecosystem that will reshape intercity travel in India and usher in a new era of fast, safe, and sustainable mobility.
