MMRDA floated tender for construction of 22-km long Mumbai Metro Line 12

Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a strategic move to bolster Mumbai's metro connectivity, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has re-invited tenders for the civil construction of Mumbai Metro's Line-12 (Orange Line). This significant project aims to link Kalyan, Dombivali, and Amandoot (Taloja), enhancing transportation options for the ever-growing Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Mumbai Metro's Line-12, spanning 22.17 km and comprising 19 elevated stations, is set to become a southern extension of the under-construction Line-5 (Thane – Bhiwandi – Kalyan). The estimated cost of this ambitious undertaking is Rs 4,132 crore. The decision to reissue tenders follows a meticulous evaluation of the project's scope and requirements.

Originally, MMRDA had floated tenders in February 2023, dividing the project into two civil packages: CA-185 and CA-186, encompassing 17 stations. However, a subsequent reassessment prompted the authority to cancel the initial tendering process in June due to a substantial change in scope. The revised approach involves amalgamating both packages into a comprehensive tender named CA-240.

As part of the restructuring, Line-12's northern terminal will now be at Kalyan Railway Station. Furthermore, two new stations, Kalyan and APMC Kalyan, originally intended for Line-5, have been incorporated into Line-12's blueprint. This adjustment demonstrates MMRDA's commitment to optimizing the metro network to meet the evolving needs of the region.

Key Project Details

  • Estimated Cost of Work: Rs. 1877.88 crore
  • Work Completion Period: 30 months
  • Pre-Bid Meeting: January 3, 2024, at 11.00 am
  • Bid Submission End Date: January 25, 2024, at 5.00 pm
  • Bid Opening Date: January 29, 2024 at 11.00 am

The scope of work includes the design and construction of the elevated viaduct, encompassing chainage -860.224 m to +21316.022 m, and 19 elevated stations. These stations include Kalyan, APMC Kalyan, Ganesh Nagar, Pisavali Gaon, Golavli, Dombivli MIDC, Sagaon, Sonarpada, Manpada, Hedutane, Kolegaon, Nilje Gaon, Vadavli (khu), Bale, Waklan, Turbhe, Pisarve Depot, Pisarve, and Amandoot. The project also involves creating a connecting line to the depot from the main line.

With Line-5's Kalyan – Ganesh Nagar section now integrated into Line-12, Line-5's length is shortened from 24.95 km to approximately 23.53 km. A more precise figure will be available when MMRDA publishes tender notices for the Bhiwandi – Kalyan section's civil work, which will include an underground component.

Remarkably, Mumbai's CA-240 package, spanning 22.17 km, is the second-longest civil package in India's metro construction history. The longest package, at 31 km, is Hyderabad Metro's Airport Express Line, won by L&T in August 2023. However, uncertainties surround its execution following recent changes in the state government.

The reissuing of tenders for Mumbai Metro Line-12 underscores MMRDA's commitment to creating a robust and efficient metro network for Mumbai. As the project progresses, it is poised to significantly enhance connectivity and ease transportation challenges in the bustling metropolitan region.
