Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a fresh bid to enhance service reliability and operational efficiency, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has officially invited bids for the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) contract of the Mumbai Monorail, covering the 19.54-kilometre stretch from Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk to Chembur. The total contract value is pegged at ₹297 crore and will be awarded for a duration of five years.
As per the recently published tender notification, bids will be accepted from July 29, 2025, with the final submission deadline set for September 11, 2025. The tender has been floated under Tender ID: 2025_MMRDA_1204955_1 and Tender No: M3OCL/PL/TC/01. An Earnest Money Deposit (EMD) of ₹10 lakh has been prescribed for all participating bidders.
The scope of work involves the complete operations and maintenance of the Mumbai Monorail system, including train operations, station management, depot handling, rolling stock upkeep, electrical and mechanical systems maintenance, and customer service. The selected agency will also be responsible for ensuring safety, punctuality, asset management, and real-time performance monitoring over the five-year term.
The Mumbai Monorail, India’s first and only operational monorail system, serves a crucial role in providing mass transit connectivity across central and eastern Mumbai. Stretching from Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk in South Mumbai to Chembur in the eastern suburbs, the line caters to thousands of commuters daily, passing through key areas like Wadala, Dadar East, and Mahul Road.
MMRDA’s decision to bring in a professional O&M contractor reflects its ongoing efforts to improve the monorail’s performance, ridership, and commuter satisfaction, after years of underutilization and technical glitches. With this new contract, the authority aims to revamp service frequency, minimize downtime, and ensure consistent upkeep of infrastructure and trainsets.
The selected operator will also play a pivotal role in data-driven operations, potentially integrating digital ticketing systems and automated controls to enhance user experience. The contract is expected to attract both national and international players with expertise in rail-based O&M solutions.
With Mumbai’s metro ecosystem rapidly expanding, the monorail is expected to act as a last-mile connector and a complementary transport service. This tender signals MMRDA’s intent to revive and optimize the monorail system, bringing it closer in line with global standards of urban mass transit.
