Kolkata, India (Metro Rail Today): The Railway Board, Ministry of Railways has accorded appointment of 1990-batch officer of IRSE (Indian Railway Service of Engineers) Naresh Chandra Karmali on the post of Managing Director, Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (KMRCL). He is elevated from the post of Director (P&P) to the Managing Director within the same organisation.
Karmali assumed his charge as new Managing Director of KMRCL last week. The post was vacant after superannuation of KMRCL's ex-Managing Director Chandeswar Nath Jha on 30th November 2022.
Karmali is a civil engineer from IIT-Kharagpur, had helmed the crisis management during the three incidents of subsidence at Bowbazar. Until February 2021, he was general manager (civil), in-charge of the 6 km elevated section, along with the depot at Central Park and the rolling stock, which underwent complex oscillation trials. He elevated on the post of Director (Project & Planning) in February 2021.
Now he will lead the remaining sections of East-West Metro Corridor (Line 2) of Kolkata Metro.
KMRCL is implementing the East-West Metro corridor which includes an underwater tunnel that will pass beneath the river Hooghly. The underwater tunnel in Kolkata is expected to be operational by 2023.
The 16.6 km long East-West Metro corridor includes 5.8 km of the elevated route and 10.8 km of an underground section. Currently, 9.1 km route of East-West Metro Corridor is operational with 8 stations and remaing 7.31 km section is under construction.
