Hyderabad, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant development, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has issued directives to Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) Limited officials to expedite key aspects of the proposed revised Airport Metro alignment via the Old City. This strategic move aims to enhance connectivity and modernize urban transportation infrastructure.
The Chief Minister emphasized the urgency of conducting traffic studies and preparing detailed project reports (DPRs) for the revised Airport Metro alignment. Despite the official agreement between the State government and Southern Railway still pending, preparatory work is underway to assess potential upgrades to existing Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) stations.
HMR officials, led by Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy, have initiated inspections of MRTS stations, particularly in the Old City area. The objective is to identify opportunities for improvement and ascertain the facilities that should be added to bring these stations up to the standards set by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL).
The team is also exploring the feasibility of laying a section of the metro rail at road level on the Laxmiguda-Jalpally-Mamidipally stretch. This potential modification is aimed at reducing construction costs. The Chief Minister has expressed interest in personally inspecting and facilitating road widening efforts to ensure minimal impact on sensitive structures.
To contribute to the funding of the Airport Metro project and encourage the development of the Old City and its environs, the Chief Minister has directed HMDA Commissioner and Municipal Administration & Urban Development Secretary M. Dana Kishore to identify government lands along the designated stretch for Transit Oriented Development (ToD).
In addition to the focus on the Airport Metro project, the Chief Minister has urged HMDA and HMRL to prepare extensions for existing metro rail corridors. This integrated planning aims to facilitate the city's growth on five different routes, strategically addressing the evolving needs of Hyderabad.
The directive also includes incorporating metro rail connectivity in the Musi riverfront East-West corridor, planning connectivity from the airport area to Kandukur on the Srisailam highway, and exploring expansions from JBS metro station to Shameerpet and Paradise metro station to Kandlakoya/Medchal in phase three.
Five new extensions proposed
With these proactive measures and strategic planning, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy envisions a modernized and efficient metro rail system that caters to the present and future needs of Hyderabad, reinforcing the city's position as a hub for sustainable urban transportation.
