Agra, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant stride towards enhancing urban connectivity, Afcons Infrastructure – SAM India Joint Venture unveiled their latest achievement – the initiation of the third tunnel boring machine (TBM) named Shivaji (S-718C) at the renowned Taj Mahal Station. This momentous event took place as part of the ambitious 29.40 km Agra Metro Phase 1 project.
Amidst great anticipation and excitement, the refurbished Ø6.63m diameter Herrenknecht Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machine, Shivaji, has been entrusted with the pivotal task of constructing twin tunnels spanning over 14.25 km. These tunnels are designated for the 7.93 km stretch between RBS College Ramp and Taj Mahal Ramp on Line-1, known as Package AGCC-02.
Shivaji will commence its journey by constructing a meticulously planned 235m tunnel for the up-line, beginning from Taj Mahal Station's east-end at Purani Mandi Chauraha. This tunnel will elegantly snake its way towards the Fatehabad Road ramp, a crucial link connecting to Sam India’s Package AGCC-01, where ongoing trial runs are setting the stage for operational excellence.
Shivaji, also fondly remembered as TBM S-718, boasts a history of dedicated service to the cause of urban development. It previously played a pivotal role under the Afcons – Transtonnelstroy Joint Venture between 2013 and 2016, contributing to the Chennai Metro Phase 1 project's success. Specifically, it undertook responsibilities for the UAA-05 and UAA-01 packages, marking its prominence in the realm of modern engineering.
The journey to this moment of glory involved meticulous efforts, including Shivaji's refurbishment at Herrenknecht’s facility in Tamil Nadu. The machine underwent rigorous testing, clearing the Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) in April 2023. With its components meticulously assembled and readied at Taj Mahal Station in July, the stage was set for Shivaji to embark on its renewed mission.
Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) awarded Afcons – SAM Consortium the prestigious civil construction contract for this section in March 2022. The contract, valued at Rs. 1819.79 crore, comes with a deadline of 48 months. This section, spanning from chainage 3630.000 to 11564.485, is a vital link encompassing twin tunnels that will connect seven pivotal stations. These stations, namely Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Jama Masjid, SN Medical College, Agra College, Raja ki Mandi, and RBS College, are set to transform the urban landscape.
As the majestic TBM Shivaji embarks on this remarkable journey, it brings to light the convergence of innovation, engineering excellence, and a vision for a more connected future. The Agra Metro Phase 1 project continues to carve a path of progress, and with the unveiling of Shivaji, the wheels of transformation are set in motion, promising an urban renaissance like never before.
