Tunneling Work Commences on Mumbai Metro's Line 7A

Mumbai, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant milestone for Mumbai's transportation infrastructure, the tunneling work has officially commenced on the 3.4-kilometer-long Mumbai Metro Line 7A. This extension of the red line, also known as Metro 7, is set to play a pivotal role in enhancing connectivity within the city.

The Mumbai Metro Line 7A extension will connect Dahisar East to Gundavali, and upon completion, it will establish a crucial link between Andheri East and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).

One of the notable features of this project is the construction of a twin tunnel that spans approximately 2.49 kilometers of the total 3.42-kilometer alignment. The tunneling work is a significant engineering endeavor and a testament to Mumbai's commitment to improving its transportation infrastructure.

Alignment Details

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has provided insights into the alignment of Metro Line 7A. It is partially elevated and runs parallel to the Western Express Highway and Sahar elevated road. The Airport Colony Metro station is elevated and is situated along the Airport Authority of India colony.

The underground section of the alignment begins just before the vehicular underpass of the Sahar elevated road and will eventually connect to the CSMIA Metro station underground. This station runs parallel to terminal T2 and the underground Metro Line 3, creating a seamless connection for commuters.

Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) at Work

For the underground portion of the project, the construction will involve the use of two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). These machines are essential for creating tunnels efficiently and with precision. Both TBMs have been installed at the site, and the initial drive for TBM T62 has already commenced, as per information provided by the MMRDA.

While the initial drive for TBM T60 is set to begin with a slight lag of 30 days compared to the first TBM, the underground station's completion is anticipated by December 2024.

Enhanced Connectivity and Reduced Travel Time

Once operational, Mumbai Metro Line 7A will offer direct connectivity to the international airport from the Mira Bhayandar area (Metro Line 9) and the Western suburbs (Metro Line 2A and Metro Line 7). This development is expected to significantly reduce travel time to the airport, benefiting both residents and visitors.

Furthermore, the Metro Line 7A will establish connectivity between Metro Line 3 and the international airport, further streamlining transit. This connectivity improvement has the potential to cut down travel times to the airport by 30-60 minutes, making it a more efficient and convenient mode of transportation.

Additionally, the proposed Metro Line 8 will connect to the Navi Mumbai International Airport, creating an integrated network that promises to transform Mumbai's transportation landscape.

In conclusion, the commencement of tunneling work on Mumbai Metro's Line 7A marks a significant step forward in the city's efforts to enhance transportation infrastructure. This project, with its twin tunnels and improved connectivity to the airport and other metro lines, is set to make commuting in Mumbai more efficient and enjoyable for its residents and visitors alike.
