New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): In a significant stride towards enhancing India's urban transportation landscape, the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai is gearing up to unveil the debut Vande Metro by the end of this year. Building upon the success of the semi-high speed Vande Bharat trains, the ICF is engineering a Metro variant tailored for short-distance routes, set to redefine commuter experiences.
With the triumph of the Vande Bharat trains, the ICF has embarked on a remarkable journey to bring forth the Vande Metro, catering to short-distance routes that demand efficient connectivity. Serving as an apt replacement for Mainline Electric Multiple Units (MEMU), this innovative project underscores the commitment to upgrading India's rail infrastructure.
Anticipated to revolutionize short-distance commuting, the first prototype of the Vande Metro is scheduled for a December-end rollout from the ICF. Just like its predecessor, the Vande Metro trains will boast fully air-conditioned (AC) interiors, transforming travel comfort. Operating at a maximum speed of 130 km per hour, these trains will offer an array of amenities, including automatic doors, improved restrooms, and onboard infotainment.
Looking ahead, the ICF envisions introducing the sleeper variant of the Vande Metro by March 2024. This iteration will comprise 11 AC 3-tier coaches, four AC two-tier coaches, and one 1st Class AC coach, tailored for routes spanning over 600 km. Much like the celebrated Vande Bharat, the Vande Metro will encompass almost all its amenities except for pantry cars. Accommodating both seating facilities for 100 passengers and ample standing space for over 200, these trains are meticulously designed for short-distance travel.
B G Mallya, the General Manager of ICF, sheds light on the advancements that define the Vande Metro. He reveals that these trains will feature enhanced acceleration, achieved through strategically positioning power packs beneath every alternate coach. Compared to the existing MEMUs, this configuration promises smoother acceleration, with six coaches hosting underslung power packs. The innovation ensures efficient and swift travel experiences for commuters.
Catering to the unique demands of intercity short-distance travel, the Vande Metro will introduce double leaf doors, simplifying the boarding and disembarking process. Crafted with the commuter's comfort in mind, this design element will facilitate seamless entry and exit, contributing to a hassle-free journey.
The Vande Metro holds the potential to bridge gaps in connectivity by covering distances within 200-250 kilometers from major cities like Chennai and Mumbai. Envisioned to serve as a reliable link for intercity travelers, this project epitomizes the essence of modernization in urban transportation.
The Vande Metro initiative stems from the legacy of the Vande Bharat trains. Initially launched as Train 18 and later rebranded as Vande Bharat, these trains have been a testament to Indian ingenuity and manufacturing prowess. Since 2018, the ICF has crafted these indigenously manufactured premium train sets that can reach speeds of up to 180 km per hour, revolutionizing rail travel across the nation.
In the pursuit of innovation, the ICF is also developing the Vande Sleeper variant. Designed for longer routes, these trains will feature a pantry in every alternate coach, ensuring passengers have access to sustenance throughout their journey. The ICF team is actively working on refining the train model, with the first prototype set to emerge by the conclusion of the 2023-2024 financial year.
In a dynamic landscape marked by innovation and commitment to progress, the introduction of the Vande Metro by the ICF signifies a pivotal step towards revolutionizing short-distance commuting experiences. With advanced amenities, strategic design, and a vision of seamless connectivity, the Vande Metro promises a brighter future for urban transportation.
