India set to launch World's Longest and Powerful Hydrogen-Powered Train

New Delhi, India (Metro Rail Today): In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable transportation, Indian Railways is developing the country’s first hydrogen-powered train, which is set to become one of the longest and most powerful hydrogen trains globally. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed this development in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on 7th February 2025.

The innovative project will involve retrofitting a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) rake with hydrogen fuel cells. This fully indigenously developed hydrogen train is poised to set new benchmarks in rail technology, according to Vaishnaw.

"The specifications for this hydrogen train have been meticulously crafted by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO)," the minister stated. "Once completed, it will not only be one of the longest hydrogen-powered trains but also among the most powerful in the world."

This ambitious project comes in response to a query raised by MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, who asked about the progress of hydrogen train technology in India. Vaishnaw further elaborated that the project will include the development of specialized on-ground infrastructure for hydrogen refueling. The facility will feature an integrated hydrogen production, storage, and dispensing system. Additionally, all necessary safety approvals for the infrastructure have already been secured from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO).

Vaishnaw emphasized that this initiative underscores Indian Railways' commitment to embracing alternative energy solutions for a greener and more sustainable future. "This project is a significant step in advancing India’s vision of a cleaner transportation sector, reinforcing our efforts towards reducing the carbon footprint of the rail network," he added.

The hydrogen-powered train marks a major milestone in India's journey towards sustainable mobility and clean energy adoption, setting the stage for a future where rail travel becomes more eco-friendly and energy-efficient.
