Kolkata, India (Metro Rail Today): In a major boost to India’s high-speed rail ambitions, Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel Factory Pvt. Ltd. (JTRFPL)—a material unlisted subsidiary of Jupiter Wagons Limited (JWL)—has secured a prestigious order valued at ₹215 crore for the supply of 5,376 high-precision wheelsets for the Vande Bharat train project.
The Letter of Intent (LOI), dated August 19, 2025, covers the delivery of 2,688 motor wheelsets and 2,688 trailer wheelsets, all of which will be integral to the expanding fleet of Vande Bharat semi-high-speed trains. This development further strengthens JWL’s role in India's modern rail ecosystem and reinforces the government’s mission to promote indigenous manufacturing under Make in India.
Vivek Lohia, Managing Director, Jupiter Wagons Limited, remarked, “We are thrilled to secure this order for the Vande Bharat project, which stands as a symbol of India’s engineering prowess and modern transportation vision. The LOI is a strong recognition of our capability in delivering world-class rail components. With this engagement, we reaffirm our commitment to support the country’s high-speed rail infrastructure and contribute towards a modern, self-reliant, and future-ready railway system.”
The Vande Bharat trains represent the cutting edge of India’s passenger rail transformation. Designed for speed, safety, and comfort, these trains rely on advanced components for optimal performance and durability. JWL’s high-precision wheelsets will play a pivotal role in improving ride quality and reducing lifecycle maintenance costs, directly impacting operational efficiency.
This order also supports the government’s strategic shift towards self-reliance in advanced rail technologies, reducing dependency on imported components and encouraging local innovation and manufacturing.
As part of its long-term growth strategy, Jupiter Wagons is establishing a state-of-the-art production facility in Odisha, set to become one of the largest forged wheelset manufacturing hubs in Asia. Backed by a ₹2,500 crore investment, the facility will increase JWL’s production capacity from the current 20,000 to 1,00,000 forged wheelsets annually by 2027.
Once operational, the Odisha facility will:
Meet the growing domestic demand for passenger and freight rolling stock components
Significantly reduce India’s reliance on imports
Enable faster fulfillment of large-scale national projects such as Vande Bharat and Dedicated Freight Corridors
JWL’s ongoing expansion and technological upgrades are aligned with the national mission of Viksit Bharat 2047, which envisions world-class infrastructure, indigenous innovation, and sustainable mobility solutions across sectors. By developing critical components for high-speed trains and investing in capacity-building, Jupiter Wagons is positioning itself as a key contributor to India’s future-ready rail economy.
The ₹215 crore order for Vande Bharat wheelsets is more than a commercial success—it’s a strategic milestone for both Jupiter Wagons Limited and India’s high-speed rail aspirations. With an expanded production footprint and a growing portfolio of precision-engineered rail components, JWL is primed to help power the next era of sustainable, efficient, and self-reliant transport infrastructure in India.
